| The
company planned an incentive program that would
reward not only sales personnel but also support
staff who often resented being left out of such
activities. "Carousel Magic" was chosen as
the promotion theme, and the logo appeared on
registered key tags, wooden nickels and other
specialties given at kick-off meetings. Mini
carnivals at various offices provided employees with
opportunities to play games such as "pitch for
sales" (ring toss) and "knock down the
competition" (hit the cans). All games and
refreshments could be purchased with wooden nickels
the employees had been given. Imprinted T-shirts,
sweatshirts, beach towels, playing cards and flying
discs were the prizes. Presentation folders were
distributed to explain the rules. Employees could
earn points for prizes in a sweepstakes drawing or
could win prizes in a scratch-off contest based on
their performance. Non-sales employees were given
peat pot plants and rakes to encourage them to plant
a referral "seed" that would lead to a
sales "harvest!" A brass Christmas
ornament was given in appreciation to all who
participated. In spite of a fou-month work stoppage
by NYNEX union workers, the program produced
revenues surpassing the previous year by $2 million.
"I know of no company that could boast of such
accomplishments under such constraints," a
staff director said. |
